Home Modifications for Aging in Place: A Rhode Island Safety Checklist
A room-by-room safety checklist for Rhode Island families modifying a home for a senior loved one — covering grab bars, lighting, flooring, stair safety, and more.
Why Home Modifications Matter
Most Rhode Island seniors want to remain in their own homes as they age. The good news: with the right modifications, home can be the safest place for a senior to be. Falls are the #1 cause of injury-related death in adults 65+. Simple, affordable changes can dramatically reduce risk.
Bathroom Safety ✓
- [ ] Install grab bars beside toilet and in shower/tub (hire a professional — they must be anchored to studs)
- [ ] Add non-slip mat or strips to shower and bath floor
- [ ] Use a shower chair or tub transfer bench
- [ ] Install a handheld showerhead
- [ ] Raise toilet height with a toilet riser if needed
- [ ] Ensure bathroom door opens outward or use a sliding door
- [ ] Set water heater to 120°F to prevent scalding
Kitchen Safety ✓
- [ ] Keep frequently used items at waist level (no overhead reaching)
- [ ] Use a kitchen stool with back support for long tasks
- [ ] Install pull-out shelves and drawer organizers
- [ ] Use a microwave at counter height, not above the stove
- [ ] Keep a fire extinguisher accessible
- [ ] Consider automatic stove shut-off devices
Bedroom Safety ✓
- [ ] Install bedside rails or a bed assist handle
- [ ] Use a hospital-style bed if needed (available through Medicaid)
- [ ] Ensure pathway from bed to bathroom is clear and well-lit
- [ ] Install a night light or motion-sensor lighting
- [ ] Keep a phone or medical alert device within arm's reach of bed
Stairway & Hallway Safety ✓
- [ ] Install sturdy handrails on BOTH sides of all stairs
- [ ] Ensure stairs are well-lit (motion sensor lights help)
- [ ] Remove throw rugs or secure with non-slip tape
- [ ] Consider a stair lift if stairs are a regular challenge
- [ ] Mark step edges with contrasting color tape
Entry & Exit Safety ✓
- [ ] Install a ramp if there are steps at the entrance
- [ ] Ensure exterior lighting is adequate
- [ ] Use a keypad door lock to eliminate fumbling with keys
- [ ] Widen doorways if wheelchair or walker access is needed (standard 32" → 36")
